Yarrabilba residents will be asked to participate in a pilot program to assist in the eradication of fire ants.

The pilot was discussed when Logan City Council was briefed recently by Biosecurity Queensland on the latest developments in the National Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program.

Participants in the pilot will be invited to register their interest to receive ant-killing bait along with directions on how to handle it safely.

The bait is an insect growth regulator and when applied in accordance with directions, is non-toxic to humans and pets.

Participants in the program will be asked to conduct two rounds of treatment on their property.

Council officers will work with the National Red Imported Fire Ant Program to support the pilot.

Studies show fire ants ten to be more active after periods of rain or storms, as has been experienced in the City of Logan earlier this month.

A report will also be prepared detailing options for the implementation of a Red Imported Fire Ant management program on Council-owned and controlled land.

For more information on the pilot program call Council on 3412 3412.
