The History of Carbrook, as Told by Locals

Julie Walker is a local editor that has lived in the area for the past 36 years. Over 20 years ago for the schools 120th Anniversary, Julie along with other parents from the Carbrook State School Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) and the wider community were the driving force behind the book, Recollections: Stories of Carbrook. The book is a collection of ‘stories that form the recollections of living and growing up in the district that was settled by German immigrants, and its subsequent growth and change’.

Originally starting as a fundraising cookbook for the school, it slowly morphed into what it is today; thanks to the flood of historical stories and images from the community and feedback from friends.

Over several months, Walker and volunteers collaborated with locals, who were passionate about ‘their heritage and their enthusiasm and enjoyment of living in the community of Carbrook ensure the book contained some great tales and rare photographs’.

In creating this book, Walker makes note of other historical books of the school that have been published for the 90th, 100th and so forth anniversaries. Their aim was never to replace those accounts of the school but rather add to them.

Recollections: Stories of Carbrook, 1999.
