The History of Valentine’s Day

“Where there is great love, there are always wishes … and flowers”.

Valentine’s Day flowers signify love and romance and we give them as a celebration of our love for each other. The origins of Valentine’s Day, however, are a little murky and have nothing to do with flowers, love or romance.

St Valentine

It all began in Rome when Valentine a priest was imprisoned by Claudius II for marrying people in the Christian Church. Claudius had decided to ban marriage because he thought that his soldiers would fight better if they did not have to worry about their wives and children, in the case of their death in battle.

Whilst in jail, Valentine came to tutor and befriend the jailor’s daughter, a young girl who had been blind since birth. In February 270 AD, Valentine was executed but not before sending a note to the jailor’s daughter, signed ‘from your Valentine’.

The Significance of Flowers on Valentine’s Day

Today, we honour and celebrate Valentine’s life by sending messages of love to our significant other by the way of flowers. The giving of flowers on this day apparently originated from the time of Charles II of Sweden, who introduced ‘the language of flowers’ from Persia. Every single flower was given a very significant meaning and a bouquet of flowers could hide an entire conversation!

So instead of letters, people used to send bouquets of flowers as a form of secret correspondence; becoming widely popular across the globe in the 1800s. This symbolism attached to flowers has continued on down through the centuries and today, we celebrate the life of Valentine by giving Valentine’s Day flowers to the person we love.

Valentine’s Day in Australia

By the 1900s, the tradition had well and truly made its way to Australia and Valentine’s Day cards were all the rage, after new printing technology assisted in their creation.

Today, Australians send millions of Valentines each year, often choosing to express their love with flowers!

Whether your love has a long history, or whether it’s just beginning, Valentine’s Day gives you the chance to show how much your loved one means to you.
