One of Logan’s most loved family-run chicken stores is set to close suddenly leaving a hole in The Market Room precinct at Logan Hyperdome.

Family run business, The Chicken Emporium at Logan Hyperdome will close today (Sunday, March 13), due to rising rents and losing many of their customers to the big supermarkets during Covid-19.

Business owners and long-time locals Scott and Gina Makfield made the shock closure announcement with “heavy hearts” this week after six years in business.

“We can’t stay open, after three years of Covid-19 and then the floods on top of it, along with high rents and no foot traffic – it just killed us,” Gina said.

“I definitely think that the way people shop has changed since Covid-19, as much as we don’t want the big supermarkets to take over unfortunately due to Covid-19 they have.

“We expanded into online shopping, we tried everything we could including a delivery service and it worked for a while but the average shopper doesn’t want to do too many deliveries to their house.

“They just want one delivery and this is why the big boys win, they’re a one-stop shop for everything.”

Gina said the decision to close up shop had been heartbreaking.

“I would have liked to have done more but I’m absolutely emotionally wrecked,” she said.

“I’ve had some beautiful letters from some customers that are going to truly miss us so it’s really sad.”

Behind their family-run business is Gina, who has nearly 20 years of experience in the food industry, and her partner Scott, who’s a qualified butcher.
