A popular campground has been controversially ordered to close following higher than usual levels of radioactivity.

High levels of radioactive in the top soil/sand has forced the closure of Dunwich’s Adam’s Beach campground in North Stradbroke Island during its busy Christmas holiday season.

The Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation – which manages the island – said it closed the campground following advice from the Department of Resources.

“Once works have occurred in accordance with the remediation plan, QYAC intends to reopen the Adam’s Beach campground.” it said.

*State Government investigations have found no threat to public health however.
