Local Artist Launches Sydney Exhibition

Bold, quirky and colourful are 3 words that can be used to describe local artist, business owner and mother, Kimberly Engwicht artwork. Kimberly became a full-time artist back in 2017 when she wanted to be able to have a creative side hustle whilst being a stay-at-home mum.

Since then, Kimberly’s art has gone from strength to strength and now she is preparing for her first solo exhibition!

“I am a digital illustrator that loves to create bright and colourful artworks to make people smile” stated Kimberly.

The team at Logan City Guides caught up with Kimberly to discuss her journey as an artist, her motivations and her upcoming projects.

How did the name K-Rae Designs come about?

It’s a pretty simple idea. The letter “K” is the first letter of my name and “Rae” is my middle name. My cousin used to call me K-Rae as a nickname, so when deciding on a name for my business I went with just that!

Tell us a little about your family

My family is everything to me. I have 2 children, a 6-year-old daughter and a 3-year-old son. Along with my husband, sister and brother-in-law we all live together in Rochedale South. I am of Aboriginal, South Sea Islander and Irish descent. I’m originally from Darwin, I grew up there and moved to sunny Queensland in ’09.

What inspires and influences your art?

I tend to draw a lot of inspiration from past and current pop culture. A lot of my work is inspired by classic 90’s sneakers, RnB artists and fashionable women who I like to call Girl Bosses.

How do you balance being a mum and an artist?

I don’t haha. It’s a tough gig but I have my ways to work around when I need to be present in both roles separately. I work a lot on my business during the days my kiddos are at school and daycare. On the days when my littlest one is at home, I just work around him. It totally can be a juggle, but you just get it done.

Tell us about the projects you’ve been involved in and your upcoming solo exhibition?

In 2020, I had one of my biggest years. I had my artwork projected up onto the William Jolly Bridge in Brisbane CBD during Reconciliation week. That was pretty surreal driving into the city and seeing my art on a bridge. I also illustrated an Indigenous tv show for ABC Kid’s called Languages of Our Land. That was probably the biggest project I’ve worked on thus far.

What do you love about living and working in this part of Logan?

My upcoming solo exhibition “BOLD”, runs from the 2nd of September to the 1st of October at VANDAL Gallery in Sydney. Unfortunately, due to the current COVID crisis, my exhibition will have to be run purely online. All of my artwork will still be hung in the gallery for the month and can be purchased from their online store. I’m so excited to have my first solo exhibition, but also sad that it couldn’t go ahead in person.

I love the community feel that Rochedale South and the surrounding suburbs have. It’s a great place to bring up a family with amazing local parks such as Funderwood, duck ponds you can relax by and knowing that you’re only halfway to the city and halfway to the Gold Coast.

I enjoy working in this area because it has everything, I need without travelling too far. My local printer, Cyclone Printing is in the area and has made my life sooooo much more easier knowing that I don’t need to travel too far to get quality printing.

Apart from art? What do you do to relax?

Oh, I love a good massage! Shoutout to Glynis at Healing Hands who’s one of the best. I also love knocking back a good gin and tonic whilst sitting on my back deck. Bliss.
