Local Artist, Nicola Hooper:

Illustrating Zoonoses

Have you heard of Zoonoses before?

Neither had I before I came across talented award-winning artist and Shailer Park local Nicola Hooper.

Zoonoses is the study of animal diseases that cross to humans.

Nicola has been interested in zoonoses, ever since she was initially prescribed pork insulin as a result of her diabetes. It got her thinking about the relationship between humans and animals, before focusing on our contradictory perceptions of animals in the context of fear of disease.

“My studio practise explores concepts surrounding zoonoses particularly in the narration of anecdotal news stories both visually and verbally through a fairy tale and historical rhyme context” stated Nicola.

In 2011, she went back to school to do her Masters before continuing to do her Doctorate of Visual Arts; which she completed in 2019. Her studio-based research is titled Zoonoses – A Visual Narrative.

While studying, Nicola continued creating art, with her work being exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in public and private collections.

Nicola is also an Impress Printmakers and a member of the Print Council of Australia. Over the years she has facilitated many lithography workshops over the past few years, teaching both children and adults. Currently, she teaches 10–16-year-olds drawing masterclasses at Logan Artists Association and tutor’s students at Griffith University.

In 2020, Nicola was thrilled to be asked to illustrate Pamela Rushby’s book ‘The Cow That Swam Out to Sea’ on request from the Queensland State Library.

Inspired, Nicola has started writing and illustrating her own children’s book.
