A person’s glasses are as unique as the person who wears them. This is something that local Optometrist, Dr Khanh-Tien Truong understands and works to blend eye health with looking stylish.

The team at Logan City Guides caught up with KhanhTien to discuss her motivations and how she uses her passion for fashion to help others chose eye wear that looks and feels great.

Tell us a bit about your history and why you decided to become an Optometrist?

I came to Australia as a refugee in 1994. I consider myself a people person and I thought working as a healthcare professional would give me the opportunity to help others every day. While in high school, I met an optometrist who inspired me to pursue a career in Optometry.

After graduating from QUT, I spent a few years working all over Australia, before moving to New Zealand, where I worked in various specialised independent practices as well as part-time for a major contact lens company.

Upon returning to Australia in 2010, I took a position with Andrew Knights Optometrists in Beenleigh and
took over the practice in 2014, renaming it Knights & Associates Eyecare.

To further expand on my specialty contact lens knowledge, I also worked part-time with the renowned John Mountford at his practice in Brisbane City. In 2014, I become a partner at another independent practice, A+ Eyecare Optometrists at Inala and I took sole ownership three years later.

Optometry is a fascinating profession which has been steadily expanding its scope of practice. Today this means that I can help people overcome eye disease, prescribe medications for various eye conditions and use the latest research to slow the increase of myopia (shortsightedness) in children.

What made you base your business in Beenleigh?

Following my arrival in Australia in 1994, my family and I settled in Logan City with the help of relatives. My aunty had been living in Logan for many years and had an Asian grocery shop in Logan.

Back then, we walked everywhere and found the Logan community to be so friendly and welcoming. I remember we had a wonderful neighbour, a true-blue Aussie who treated our family as his own and helped us adapt to our new life.

So, when the chance came to work in Beenleigh, it was the perfect opportunity to give something back to the community that welcomed my family all those years ago.

What sets you apart from other Optometrists?

I love science and fashion. Being an optometrist is the perfect mix, where eyecare and eyewear go hand-in-hand: I can help people with their eye and general health and also delight them with stylish eyewear. I try to treat patients in a wholistic way. Vision and eyes are only part of your overall well-being.

I pride myself in providing the full scope of optometry services using the latest technology that enables detailed analysis of the delicate structures within the eye. I strive to always be up to date with the latest evidence-based medicine and bring the latest and the best treatments to my patients.

I enjoy fitting specialist contact lenses, managing eye disease and dry eyes and I strongly believe in preventative medicine. I love seeing young children and managing their myopia (shortsightedness) and to slow its increase, which is important to prevent possible future vision loss caused by high myopia.

We aim to provide greater convenience for our patients. We maintain a fitting lab on site which enables us to provide a same-day glasses service.

This contrasts with the use of laboratory based, or even overseas lens supply methods used by many
other practices.

What do you love about living and working in this part of Logan?

That’s easy – the people! They are easy-going, diverse and multicultural. That comes with crosscultural challenges, which I enjoy. With effort and understanding we can bridge the gaps and help build a stronger community.

If you want an optometrist who sees you person rather than a number, and whose service is second to none; visit Dr Khanh-Tien at Knights & Associates Eyecare today.
